AbstractThe objective of this paper is to estimate and evaluate the deforestation areas using CCD/CBERS images. The PRODES Digital methodology was applied to two CCD images acquired over an area in Mato Grosso state. The obtained results were then compared to the results from TM/Landsat over the coincident areas covered by these two sensors. The CCD images mapped 369 km2 and TM mapped 377 km2, i.e., there was a difference of 2.12% in area estimation. The results show that CCD/CBERS data can be useful for the PRODES Digital project carried out annually by Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais.
